LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Lakewood High School implemented a metal detector/wanding system Monday through which students, staff and visitors must now pass when entering the school.
Students and staff have also been issued ID cards to be worn at all times in school, the Asbury Park Press reports. The new measures have reduced the amount of disruptive behavior on campus, officials said.
The metal detectors were already in place but was only used during sporting events, according to John Stillwell, the district’s director of security. Earlier this month, the board of education replaced school security officers from Tri-County Security with retired police officers.
