N.C. College Downgrades Armed Police Force

RALEIGH, N.C.—Officials at the all-female Meredith College laid off four of seven sworn officers last week, leaving the campus in the hands of a staff mostly comprised of security guards.

Meredith officials maintain that the layoffs were in response to low crime on campus, according to NewsObserver.com. However, some officers who were let go believe they were dismissed for being critical of the school.

One captain, for example, claims he was laid off because he filed a gender discrimination complaint against school officials with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Meredith College security officers do not have the power to arrest or the ability to carry firearms; however, school officials maintain that the school has a good relationship with the Raleigh Police Department should a major crisis occur.
