Mother of Shooting Victim Files Lawsuit Against District

Published: September 25, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — The mother of a Martinsville West Middle School shooting victim filed a lawsuit Sept. 20 alleging that the district failed to protect her son.

Rebecca Jackson filed the lawsuit on behalf of her son Chance, 15, who is still recovering from the two abdominal bullet wounds he sustained on March 25, the INDY Channel reports. Chance was shot by a former student who had been banned from the property, Michael Phelps, 16.

Jackson’s attorney said the doors to the school were left open, putting students in danger.

In August, Phelps was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder.
