A school district in Mississippi has decided to equip its security officers with pepper spray in the Fall.
The Tupelo Public School District school board decided June 9 to give its 18 school security officers the pepper spray for handling events with a lot of people, according to djournal.com. All of the officers, who are state-certified employees at the schools, have attended training to understand the chemical’s effect.
The school board’s decision comes after a recent school safety assessment by the Mississippi Department of Education’s Division of Safe and Orderly Schools.
The safety officers are not affiliated with the school resource officers, who work under the Tupelo Police Department.
