Minnesota Schools Will Introduce Drug-Sniffing Dogs

Published: July 16, 2008

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – Officials at the Osseo Area School District will unleash drug-sniffing dogs when classes begin in the fall, according to the Star Tribune.

The dogs will be placed in parking lots of at the district’s four high schools but could eventually be placed in middle school and high school buildings. The dogs are simply a way to increase security at the school, officials say. Additionally, security cameras are being installed to heighten security.

If a student is suspected of having illegal drugs on campus, that student will be pulled out of class and will be asked to voluntarily open his or her locker and/or car. If the student is discovered with drugs for the first time, he/she will face a three-day suspension and will be referred for drug-use evaluation and counseling.

The district also issued a statement announcing the searches to the media.
