CARLSBAD, Calif. — A San Diego-area school has reopened, after three construction workers tackled an active shooter who opened fire on the playground and injured two girls.
The workers, who were renovating the cafeteria at Kelly Elementary School, were able to chase down 41-year-old Brendan O’Rourke until police arrived at the scene, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. O’Rourke allegedly fired six shots from his .357 Magnum revolver during the incident.
Police are describing the suspect as a mentally disturbed loner who was facing eviction from his apartment, 10News.com reports. It’s not clear why the former security guard targeted the school. O’Rourke faces six counts of attempted murder.
The two victims, who both suffered wounds to their right arms, were treated and released from the hospital.
