Meet the University Security Experts Presenting at the Campus Safety Conference in Chicago

The Campus Safety conference in Chicago will be split up into three tracks designed to serve the needs of security professionals in different fields: K-12, higher education and hospitals.

The Campus Safety conference being held July 13-14 in Chicago, Ill., is a can’t-miss educational event for security officers, emergency management personnel and administrators responsible for the protection of hospitals and schools. Topics covered will include next generation operations-leveraging technology, successful approaches to the Clery Act and Title IX, developing a culture of safety and much more.

Here’s the educational line up for the conference’s university track:

  • Assistant Chief for the New York State University Police Department Lawrence Zacarese will discuss planning gaps and lessons learned from his experience dealing with Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. Zacarese will also demonstrate the advantages of leveraging technology to create a proactive culture when it comes to dealing with natural disasters.
  • Deputy Director of the Stalking Resource Center Rebecca Dreke will explain the ways technology can be used to stalk, talk about safety strategies for security personnel and victims and identify ways to minimize risks posed by tech use.
  • Gary Margolis, President and CEO of Social Sentinel Inc., will discuss the basic tenets of assessing threat levels and identifying at risk individuals. Specifically, Margolis will be looking at the role of social media in these processes.
  • Waubonsee Community College Dean for Students Scott Peska and Director of Emergency Management and Safety John Wu will look at some colleges that made the switch from armed to unarmed security officers and discuss the pros and cons of arming school security forces.
  • Margolis Healy Director of Organizational Assessment Services Paul Verrecchia will discuss the factors generally considered when determining appropriate staffing levels for campus police departments before introducing the Bi-Dimensional Staffing Formula, a staffing analysis method.
  • Margolis Healy Managing Partner Steven Healy will explore successful Clery Act compliance practices demonstrated by institutions focused on adopting proactive, campus-wide community approaches for preventing and responding to sexual and gender violence and identify common obstacles to overcome.
  • University of the Cumberlands Professor of Education Dr. Michael B. Colegrove will define a culture of safety at college, identify factors affecting campus safety and discuss methods of engaging the community to develop a safer campus.
