Medical Center Avoids Medicare Defunding

Published: January 25, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cape Fear Valley Medical Center (CFVMC) has reached an agreement with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to avoid the loss of millions in Medicare funding. The hospital will work to correct deficiencies that resulted in three immediate jeopardy status reports and the death of a patient in April 2011.

The deficiencies were discovered during reviews of the death of Andre LeMar Walker, who was schizophrenic, The Republic reports. He was strangled as he was restrained by hospital police officers who had never received proper training.

According to Vince Benbenek, vice president of marketing and outreach at CFVMC, the hospital plans to review all policies and procedures over 180 days, HealthLeaders Media reports.  After the review, a Medicare certification survey will take place.

In previous surveys, CMS found that the hospital needed to address problems in the following areas: governing body, patient rights, quality assessment/performance, physical environment and emergency services, among others.
