LANSING, Mich. — Following the shooting of four high school students outside Sexton High School on Sept. 17, the Michigan Education Association issued a statement urging legislators in the Michigan House to pass the Student Safety Act for a school safety hotline.
The act, Senate Bill 374, would establish an “OK-2-SAY” hotline that allows students and school personnel to anonymously report threats of school violence to Michigan State Police via telephone, email or text message. The information would then be referred to local schools and law enforcement, according to mlive.com.
The proposal, championed by Attorney General Bill Schuette and Lt. Governor Brian Calley, has been approved by the Senate and is pending before the House Appropriations Committee.
