Man Shot By Officer After Taking Hospital Staffers Hostage

TEMPLE, Fla. — A man who took Scott and White Hospital staff members hostage was shot and killed by a police officer on Sunday.

Larry Wayne Robards displayed a firearm in the treatment area of the emergency room, forcing three hostages into a common area, KXXV.com reports. After negotiating with Robards, Officer Joseph Robertson noticed one hostage attempting to grab Robards’ gun and determined the other hostages and bystanders were in imminent danger. He fired at least once at Robards, ending the hostage situation.

Robards, who had been in and out of the hospital since losing a leg to Lupus, was described by his neighbors as a “friendly guy.” Robards was treated for his gunshot wound but died Sunday evening.
