Attempted Suicide With Pesticide Poisons 3 Paramedics

Margate, Fla. — Three paramedics were poisoned, an emergency room was closed and a rescue vehicle was put out of service for hours after a man attempted to take his own life by drinking malathion, a common pesticide.

The man vomited while being transported to Northwest Medical Center, and the paramedics with him in the ambulance become dizzy and nauseous, the Sun Sentinel reports. When they arrived, hospital officials temporarily shut down the emergency room as a precaution and moved the man to another floor.

The paramedics were treated for exposure to chemical fumes. The ambulance and emergency room equipment were scrubbed down by a cleanup crew in protective suits.
