NEW YORK — A man who went to St. Barnabas Hospital to receive treatment for a rash died Jan. 20 after waiting in the facility’s emergency room for eight hours.
John Verrier, 30, checked into the hospital around 10 p.m. on Jan. 26. The following morning, a security guard later found the man’s body around 6:40 a.m. The worker described Verrier’s body as “cold, blue and stiff” when it was discovered, and believes the patient may have been dead for several hours, Daily Mail reports.
Hospital officials maintain that Verrier was checked on several times during his stay and that he seemed to be in good condition, stating that video surveillance showed that the patient was still active as late as 3:45 a.m.
However, an ER worker at St. Barnabas, who wished to remain anonymous, told WABC, that Verrier was not checked on during his stay at the hospital because there is no policy in place to check on patients in the waiting room. Additionally, the worker said the facility is understaffed.
