LUFKIN, Texas — The Lufkin ISD Police Department, which is housed on the Lufkin High School campus and serves the entire district, is a success, according to school officials. The department has been operating for a year and a half.
The department includes four officials and one dispatcher, the Lufkin Daily News reports. It serves 10,500 students, faculty and staff. The officers also attend school board meetings in the wake of a Dec. 2010 incident in which a gunman held a school board hostage before killing himself.
Police Chief Jay Jost said the department develops a healthy relationship with students beginning in elementary school, as well as creates a greater sense of safety on campus.
