Los Angeles School District Files Documents to Prevent Walkout

Published: May 29, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Officials for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have filed documents to prevent teachers from staging a one-hour walkout, which is intended to protest budget cuts to education. The demonstration is scheduled for June 6.

District officials believe the walkout would endanger the well-being of the district’s students, especially those with special needs. Therefore, the LAUSD is requesting assistance from the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) to get an injunction to prevent the walkout.

Representatives for the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union say they have been working with district administrators for two weeks to determine who would look after students for the hour teachers are protesting. Additionally, the union believes the district does very little to support teachers.

However, Maribel S. Medina, special counsel to the LAUSD Board of Education says the district fully supports the frustrations teachers have with the proposed budget cuts made by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
