Lawsuit May Follow Colo. State U. Gun Ban

When the Colorado State University (CSU) Board of Governors decides this month whether or not they will ban all weapons on campus, they will be faced with some opposition.

The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO) is threatening to sue the university if the ban goes through, according to Coloradoan.com. The coalition of Second Amendment advocates held a news conference for Feb. 1, where Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden declared his opposition to the proposed ban.

Currently, CSU is one of the only universities in the nation that allow individuals to carry concealed weapons on campus.

Those in favor of the proposed ban said that reducing the number of weapons on campus, including pellet guns and Tasers, will improve safety on campus. Weapons are already prohibited in dormitories. Banning weapons on campus is supported by the International Association of Cmapus Law Enforcement Administrators.

However, RMGO members believe the policy is too broad and that no real evidence has been shown to prove that banning guns will improve safety.

University officials said state law allows them to tell students and employees to keep guns off campus in order to keep the campus safe. Furthermore, they said they could use “exclusionary orders” to ban anyone from campus who refused to leave while carrying a concealed weapon.
