The Brevard County, Fla. , school board voted last week to have the Sheriff’s Office run district security.
Now, the Sheriff’s Office lieutenant will oversee the program, reports WFTV. Also, more uniformed officers will patrol the schools and be integrated into other programs, like college-bound safety.
The move, which was prompted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in 2012, is intended to provide consistent security throughout the county.
The Sheriff’s Office lieutenant replaces the former security director position.
“This new partnership reduces operational costs for both Brevard Public Schools and the BCSO through the elimination of the Director of District Security position, which will be replaced by BCSO Lieutenant Mike Scully,” the department said in a statement. “Lt. Scully’s position will be funded by both Brevard Public Schools and the Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Scully is a 30-year law enforcement veteran with exceptional skills in law enforcement administration, patrol, site security, and crime prevention.”
