LA Times Finds Error in Occidental College Sexual Assault Stories

Published: March 18, 2014

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Times had to correct three stories about sexual assault at Occidental College after the paper discovered a major error.

Times reporter Jason Felch published a story in December alleging that the college failed to disclose 27 sexual assault incidents that occurred in 2012 in accordance with the Clery Act.

However, the publication issued a correction on Friday noting that a review of documents revealed that none of the incidents required disclosure under the Clery Act, Gawker.com reports.

The publication also discovered that Felch carried on an inappropriate relationship with one of the sources for the Occidental story. The reporter admitted to continuing to use that individual as a source for future articles after the relationship ended.
