Baltimore, Maryland – An anesthesiologist, who works for Johns Hopkins, and her spouse, who is a U.S. Army Major and doctor, face criminal charges for allegedly plotting to give confidential military medical records to Russia.
The U.S. Department of Justice revealed last week that Anna Gabrielian, 36, and Jamie Lee Henry, 39, have been criminally charged.
They allegedly communicated with someone they thought worked for the Russian government but who was actually an undercover FBI agent. The couple told the agent they would obtain medical records on U.S. military personnel and their families and give the information to the Russian government.
Henry worked at Fort Bragg as a staff internist. Gabrielian worked at Johns Hopkins as an anesthesiology instructor.
According to the indictment, Gabrielian and Henry met with the FBI agent on August 17 at a hotel in Baltimore, saying they wanted to help Russia. Gabrielian said her spouse was a more important source for Russia than she was since Henry had more helpful information, including how the U.S. military establishes an army hospital in war conditions, and about previous training the U.S. military provided to Ukrainian personnel.
The couple were allegedly motivated to spy for Russia when the country invaded Ukraine in February. Gabrielian allegedly told the agent she even considered joining the Russian military.
Henry told the undercover agent: “My point of view is until the United States actually declares war against Russia, I’m able to help as much as I want. At that point, I’ll have some ethical issues I have to work through.”
Gabriellian replied, “You’ll work through those ethical issues.”
A week later when Gabriellian met with the agent again, she said her spouse was a “coward” and concerned about violating HIPAA. Gabriellian, however, had no such reservations.
On August 31 she provided to the agent medical records of several individuals affiliated with the U.S military.
Henry was the U.S. Army’s first known transgender soldier, having transitioned from male to female in 2015, reports Buzzfeed.
