INDIANAPOLIS — In an 86-6 vote Monday, the Indiana House of Representatives approved a bill that will help state school districts hire police officers and buy safety equipment.
The bill would set up a two-year matching grant program, which allows districts to receive up to $50,000 annually and establish the safety board to improve the security around school buildings. Additionally, it would form a 40-hour program that would train police officers hired to work in schools on how to deal with students and school facilities, the Associated Press reports.
When first introduced, the bill required all public schools to have gun-carrying employees during school hours. However, the House pulled provisions to arm employees last week.
