INDIANA — A bill that would allow schools to discipline students for off-campus activities was passed through the Indiana House of Representatives on Jan. 30 and is sitting in a Senate committee.
Existing state law allows students to be punished for “unlawful activity” that occurs on or off campus if it interferes with “school purposes or educational function,” the Student Press Law Center reports. House Bill 1169 would remove the word “unlawful” and allow students to be punished for any activities that interfere with school.
Critics of the bill said it could potentially infringe on First Amendment rights.
