Illinois Lawmakers Seek to Strengthen Sex Offender Laws

ILLINOIS — The Illinois House passed legislation that would require sex offenders to register with campus security personnel if they attend or work at a college. The legislation is part of a group of bills intended to strengthen the rules to be followed by sex offenders in the state.

Approximately 25,000 people are listed in Illinois’ sex-offender registry, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Other bills introduced this year would ban sex offenders from working at local fairs and revoke the licenses of health care workers who are listed in the registry. Another piece of legislation would require offenders who were convicted before the registry was established to register.

Critics of the bills believe that it will be impossible for sex offenders to function in society if they properly follow the proposed laws. Supporters point out that sex offenders have the highest rates of repeat offense of any type of crime.
