CHICAGO – Hundreds of Chicago students boycotted the first day of school Sept. 2 to protest funding within the Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
Illinois State Sen. James Meeks, in conjunction with 85 pastors throughout the Chicago area, are attempting to register students at New Trier High School and Sunset Elementary School in nearby Winnetka, Ill.
Buses are available to shuttle students and their parents to the suburban institutions to register for classes.
While CPS is one of the largest school systems in the country, it spent $11,300 per student last year. New Trier High School, on the other hand, spent $17,500 per student. Similar to many other districts in the nation, the more the property surrounding the school is worth, the more funding the school will receive.
Some parents who participated in the protest have opted to send their children to private school because they feel that CPS fails to provide quality education to their children.
Sen. Meeks plans to run the boycott until Sept. 5.
