VERNON, Conn. — A Rockville General Hospital administrator violated state law to allow a dead newborn to be transported by security staff to Manchester Memorial Hospital to be with its mother.
On Tuesday, police and paramedics responded to a call of a woman in labor, the Hartford Courant reports. The woman delivered a premature child who was not breathing; the infant was taken to Rockville General Hospital’s emergency room and pronounced dead. The mother was taken to Manchester Memorial Hospital.
Hospital staff decided to transport the body of the infant to Manchester Memorial, violating a state law which says only a licensed funeral director or embalmer may transport a body that has not been embalmed.
Vernon police will not pursue a criminal investigation. Police Chief James Kenny called the incident, “a well-meaning attempt to console a family that was going through a tremendous tragedy in their lives.”
