The driver of a suspected stolen car who led police on a high-speed chase was apprehended after attempting to enter a high school campus.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department began pursuing the male suspect in a white Honda around noon on Friday in East Hollywood. He continued onto the 101 Freeway before entering an East Los Angeles neighborhood at speeds of almost 100 miles per hour, according to ABC 7.
The suspect hit multiple vehicles as he drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic and weaved in and out of other cars. Video shot from a KTLA 5 helicopter shows the suspect trying to nudge other cars out of the way at a busy intersection.
The man eventually stopped on the shoulder of the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway in Alhambra where he exited the vehicle and hopped a fence. He then made his way to Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra where school officials had already been alerted of nearby police activity.
Video also shows the suspect running through the parking lot of the school while students flee into the building. One student says he saw the man run through the school campus but he did not appear to have a weapon. The school was eventually placed on lockdown.
A trained supervisor approached the suspect before he was able to enter the school. The supervisor then tackled him to the ground and was able to hold him until police arrived. The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 12:20 p.m., according to the Monterey Park Police Department.
“I’ll say this, he picked the wrong campus to jump onto,” says Principal John Scanlan. “Our employees did a terrific job of making sure all of our students were safe.”
The suspect could face charges of car theft and evading a police officer. His name has not been released.
