TOWSON, Md. — Police have charged a man with attempted first-degree murder after shooting an officer at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Wednesday.
A hospital employee was examining, Brian Dargan, 30, whose left hand was handcuffed to a gurney railing. When she noticed a needle hidden in his clothing and reached for it, Dargan grabbed her arm, but she was able to pull it away, the Baltimore Sun reports.
The hospital security officer in the room then began struggling with Dargan, who grabbed the officer’s gun. The weapon discharged once during the struggle, with a bullet grazing the officer in her right light. She did not need medical attention.
The hospital closed down its emergency department to new patients for several hours following the shooting.
