CHESTERFIELD COUNTRY, Va. — A 7-year-old girl who died on Jan. 4 at Hopkins Elementary from an allergic reaction was given a peanut by another child who did not know she had an allergy, according to police.
Ammaria Johnson ate the peanut on the playground and then approached a teacher, complaining of shortness of breath, ABC News reports. The girl was taken to the school clinic where she stopped breathing.
Experts said Johnson could have been saved by an EpiPen, but the school did not have one on hand for her. Chesterfield County school policy states that parents are responsible for providing the school with daily and emergency medications.
A proposed bill would encourage states to adopt laws requiring schools to stock EpiPens like bandages and other first aid supplies.
