Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is coming under fire for agreeing with comments on Facebook claiming the February 14, 2018 mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School was faked or planned in order to influence public opinion.
In May 2018, Greene shared on Facebook a Fox News article that questioned why a responding officer to the Parkland, Florida shooting who didn’t enter the school during the attack was still being paid, reports Forbes. Greene commented, “WHAT is going on in Parkland, Fla???”
When someone responded to her post, saying, “it’s called a pay off to keep his mouth shut since it was a false flag planned shooting,” Greene responded, “Exactly!”
Greene’s support of the Parkland conspiracy theory is just one of several “false flag” theories she has promoted over the years. She previously promoted that the 9/11 attacks were “false flags,” reports WTVC. She has also claimed in the past that the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school mass shooting was staged, reports the CT Post. The Sandy Hook mass shooting resulted in the deaths of 26 students and school staff members.
In October 2019, a jury forced Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist James Fetzer to pay a victim’s father $450,000 for falsely claiming the father had circulated fabricated copies of his six-year-old son’s death certificate.
Greene also has claimed that the 1981 attempted assassination on President Ronald Regan was a hoax.
More recently, she’s been an ardent supporter and promoter of the QAnon conspiracy group that law enforcement agencies have declared a domestic terrorism threat. She was the first QAnon backer to be elected to Congress.
Seventeen Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students and employees were killed by a lone gunman during the Valentine’s Day 2018 massacre. The attack prompted calls for stricter gun control. Additionally, disinformation campaigns claimed the massacre never happened, or the victims involved were actors.
When asked by WTVC if she believes Parkland was a “false flag” event, Greene’s office didn’t issue a denial, but instead referred the television station to her Twitter statement that was posted on Tuesday: “Gun-free school zones are a FAILURE. Laws that prevent legal ownership of firearms turn schools into targets.”
