WARRENSBURG, Mo. — A University of Central Missouri (UCM) freshman, who is gay, claims he received a letter of discipline from school administrators after he reported that his dorm roommate threatened him with a knife because of his sexual preference.
Alex Worthley, 18, said that his roommate voiced his disdain for gay people and threatened Worthley with a knife on three separate occasions. After Worthley reported the threat to the Office of Student Housing, an investigator put the two men in separate rooms. Later, Worthley received a letter of discipline from school officials, which stated that there was a strong possibility that some of Worthley’s actions escalated the situation from jesting to threatening, Fox4KC.com reports.
Receiving the letter confused Worthley, who said that the letter never identified what he specifically did that prompted the threats. He also said the letter made him feel revictimized after the incident.
Worthley believes the whole situation could have been avoided if the university had not placed the two in the same room, as his former roommate told officials he didn’t want a gay roommate. Worthley has filed an appeal to remove the letter of discipline from his student file.
