UPDATE: Fundraiser for Verbally Abused Bus Monitor Raises $700K

Published: June 21, 2012

GREECE, N.Y. — An online fundraising effort has now raised nearly $700,000 for a bus monitor who was verbally abused by students.

A kid on board the bus captured the profane taunting of bus monitor Karen Klein on Monday, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports. Klein didn’t report the incident, but the video was pulled off Facebook on June 19 and posted to YouTube. It had gone viral by the following day, with more than a million hits.

Max Sidorov, a 25-year-old nutritionist from Toronto, found the video  and set up a fundraising effort on the international crowd funding site Indiegogo.com with the goal of raising $5,000 in 30 days to send Klein on a vacation. He said the support it received far exceeded his expectations.

So far, the site has raised about $660,776 in donations, reports Fox News.
