ATLANTA — Atlanta Public Schools (APS) plans to replace 235 part-time off-duty officers with 55 full-time Atlanta Police Department officers to patrol the halls of the city’s 30 middle and high schools.
The decision comes after several shootings and fights during the last year. As part of the new arrangement, police officers will build relationships with students and work to identify discipline problems before they become criminal matters, the Associated Press reports.
All officers will undergo training on how to work with students. Full-time officers will begin monitoring high schools on Aug. 7, while middle schools will switch to full-time officers on Jan. 1.
