A security officer at Franciscan Health’s Michigan City hospital shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at another officer in the hospital’s parking lot Saturday.
The man shot, 46-year-old Thomas J. Walsh, remains in critical condition, reports nwitimes.com.
Indiana State Police are investigating the incident, which involved two off-duty Michigan police officers working as hospital security officers.

Relatives of Walsh called the hospital just before 4 p.m. to request security because he was refusing to leave his vehicle to seek medical assistance.
The two uniformed officers approached Walsh, who was sitting on the passenger side of his pickup truck. During that interaction, Walsh pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer on the driver’s side of the truck. The officer on the passenger’s side then shot Walsh several times “for fear of injury or death to the other officer,” state police said.
Walsh was treated for his injuries at the scene then airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
The officers involved in the incident have not been identified.
