The suspect, Kevin Gregson, 43, is a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer, reports The Canadian Press. The victim, Eric Czapnik, was attacked while inside his cruiser working on an unrelated case. Czapnik died at the scene.

According to investigators, the attack was apparently random. The two paramedics and hospital personnel were able to apprehend the suspect, according to the news report.
