Florida Universities Seek $18M to Improve Campus Security

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida’s Board of Governors requested $18 million from the legislature to increase safety at 11 of Florida’s public universities on March 27.

According to The Alligator,  if the request is granted, each university will receive at least one improvement for its emergency notification systems. That alone will cost $14 million.

More than $3 million of the funds will assist in hiring 61 additional police officers. Six new emergency managers will cost around $600,000, and the remainder will be used for equipment and training.

Both the state house and Senate must approve the plans before they are executed. The board notes that it might be difficult because every state dollar is being examined; however, they insist the changes are needed.
