TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University (FSU) is ramping up its security measures for the upcoming commencement ceremonies following the tragic campus shooting on April 17. The increased focus on campus safety aims to ensure a secure environment for graduates, families, and university staff.

The announcement was made on April 24 by FSU President Richard McCullough, who expressed his commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the FSU community, reports WCTV. The enhanced security measures include additional police officers and support personnel stationed at all event locations, as well as proactive emergency response protocols.
FSU Shooting Victims to Be Honored
This year’s commencement ceremonies will include a moment of silence to honor the victims of the recent mass shooting. Two employees — 57-year-old Robert Morales and 45-year-old Tiru Chabba — were tragically killed in the April 17 incident, while six others sustained injuries. The moment of reflection will serve as an opportunity for attendees to pay their respects to the deceased and victims still recovering from their injuries and stand in solidarity with their families.

The increased commencement security comes in direct response to the shooting, during which a 20-year-old FSU student opened fire on campus. The heightened police presence since the tragedy has been a source of comfort for many students
FSU’s commencement ceremonies will take place on May 2 and 3, with three events scheduled daily at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m., reports WXTL.
