MIAMI — The Florida International University Police Department has started conducting an internal survey on campus security measures, including cameras, panic buttons and electronic key locks.
The university, which has roughly seven sites, currently has 1,500 cameras on all its campuses. While the university has installed 121 panic buttons at its Modesto Maidique Campus, 32 at the Biscayne Bay Campus and one at the Engineering Center, campus police deemed 13 of the devices inoperable, FIUSM.com reports.
Additionally, 11 buildings are equipped with electronic locks that allow police dispatch to lock doors and close off entire structures. Police have discovered that several of those devices are not functioning properly.
Campus police hope to provide more camera and panic button integration in the near future. The department also plans to conduct an annual assessment of security measures.
