A Florida lawmaker has filed a bill that would allow those licensed to carry concealed weapons to bring firearms on to college and university campuses.

The filing of House Bill 4005 follows a shooting at Florida State University in November that left three people injured and the gunman dead. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Greg Steube (R-Sarasota), said the incident drives home the need for such legislation, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

A similar bill failed in 2011 in part due to the testimony of Robert Cowie, the father of a Florida State student who was killed by a stray bullet at a campus party.

The new bill will come up for consideration this spring.
