Fight Ends in Death at University of Arizona

Published: September 6, 2007

PHOENIX – University of Arizona (UA) freshman, Mia Henderson, 18, died from stab wounds as a result of an early morning brawl with her roommate.

Henderson reported her suspicions to campus police on Aug. 28 that her roommate, also an 18-year-old freshman, had stolen personal items from her. Officers declined to release the name of the roommate and also the items suspected to be stolen because the report was under investigation.

Originally living in the same dorm room, the two women had been separated until arrangements were made to separate the roommates permanently. Campus police are unaware as to how the two ended back in the same room.

While the details of what led to the fight remain unclear, at 5:45 a.m., campus police responded to reports of screaming coming from the second floor of Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall.

Forty-five minutes after discovering the two women, both with injuries, Henderson died at University Medical Center, a mile away from the campus. Her roommate was treated for injuries that were not life threatening.

UA President Robert Shelton sent out an electronic notification of the event, however, UA did not issue a campus alert or institute a lockdown.
