The father of the school shooter at Marysville-PIlchuck High School in Washington was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm March 31.

The complaint alleges Raymond Lee Fryberg, 42, illegally purchased the Beretta PX4 Storm that his 15-year-old son used to kill four classmates and himself in October of last year. Fryberg had been charged with domestic abuse and was banned from owning firearms after violating the court’s protection order in 2012.

Fryberg allegedly lied on his disclosure form when he made the gun purchase in January 2013. But state officials say a background check would not have shown Fryberg’s record because the court order was never entered into the national background check database, according to the Seattle Times. Authorities are still investigating why Fryberg was never entered into the system.

The sporting goods store where Fryberg bought the gun, Cabela’s on the Tulalip Indian Reservation, said in a statement that they complied with all legal regulations, including a background check.
