Family May Sue Rutgers U. in Tyler Clementi Suicide Case

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The family of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers University freshman who committed suicide after he was secretly filmed by his roommate during a gay sexual encounter, may soon file a lawsuit against the university. The family alleges that Rutgers University failed to implement policies that would prevent or deter such acts.

The Clementi family filed a notice with the university, which gives them a period of six months to decide whether or not to file a lawsuit, ABC News reports.

In October, the university was subpoenaed by the Middlesex County prosecutor’s office for the E-mails exchanged between Clementi and university personnel. The E-mails would verify Clementi’s statement on an online message board that said he had requested another roommate after discovering he was being videotaped.
