A jury awarded $95 million in damages to the families of eight people who may have been among a number of patients murdered by a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Charles Cullen, 50, who worked at the hospital from 2000 to 2002, admitted to killing 29 people at hospitals in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, reports the Associated Press. Reportedly, Cullen told authorities he killed as many as 40 people; however, he has not claimed responsibility for the deaths of the patients named in the civil suit.

A county judge ruled March 11 that Cullen was responsible for the eight deaths after Cullen refused to respond to the lawsuit and did not mount a defense.

It took jurors three hours to deliberate during the three-day trial, which was to determine what damages, if any, should be awarded.
