El Paso VA Clinic Gunman Identified as Ex-Employee

Shooter had previously threatened victim at a local grocery store.

The man responsible for Tuesday’s shooting at the El Paso Veterans Administration Health Care System clinic has been identified as a former clerk at the facility.

The gunman, Jerry Serrato, 48, was medically discharged from the Army in 2009 and served in Iraq. He worked at the clinic at the same time as his victim, Dr. Timothy Fjordbak, 63, reports the Associated Press.

RELATED 8 Verbal Indicators of Violence

In 2013, the doctor reported that Serrato made a verbal threat to him at a grocery store. Fjordbak didn’t recognize the man, and there appears to be no other connection between the shooter and his victim.

In the clinic, which is next to William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, Serrato shot Fjordbak on Tuesday and then turned the gun on himself. Both men died.
