ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Police arrested former Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Police Chief Sam Beamon for failing to discharge duties related to 78 crimes on the campus.
Beamon, 52, has been charged with a misdemeanor after a yearlong State Bureau of Investigation search uncovered that Beamon failed to properly investigate 78 reported crimes – including 12 sexual assaults – between Jan. 1, 2010 and May 13, 2013, PilotOnline.com reports.
Beamon, who served as the university’s police chief since 2004, resigned from his position at ECSU after local police discovered that more than 100 cases dating back to 2007 were unresolved.
The investigation prompted ECSU Chancellor Willie Gilchrist to retire, and resulted in the termination of five individuals from the 11-member campus police force.
Beamon is expected to appear in court on June 27. If convicted, he could spend up to 120 days in jail, WTKR.com reports.
