Los Angeles, California – Longtime University of Southern California (USC) campus gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall was found dead in his home on Wednesday.
Tyndall, 76, was accused of sexual misconduct against scores of women at the university and was set to be tried next year, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Tyndall was arrested in 2019 and charged with 18 counts of sexual penetration and 11 counts of sexual battery by fraud in cases involving multiple young women. Prosecutors also charged him with five counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person and one count of sexual battery by fraud. Tyndall had pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and was free on bond at the time of his death.
Allegations against Tyndall, who was the school’s sole full-time gynecologist in the student health center from 1989 to 2016, spanned from 2009 to 2016. In 2018, during a search of Tyndall’s home and storage locker, detectives found more than 1,000 videos described as homemade sex tapes and a number of sexually explicit photographs.
Allegations against Tyndall prompted USC to pay more than $1.1 billion to settle claims made by thousands of his former patients. The payout was the largest in history made by an institution of higher education, reports the Los Angeles Times. The school also agreed to create a centralized record-keeping system to track sexual misconduct allegations against employees.
Authorities say Tyndall died of natural causes.
