Ex-Felon Takes Nurse Hostage at Calif. Hospital

OAKLAND, Calif.—A 49-year-old man who was described as “disturbed and disoriented” was arrested after brandishing a gun and holding a nurse hostage at Children’s Hospital of Oakland.

The suspect, Cottriel Broadnax, entered the hospital’s emergency room around 3:15 a.m., on July 30, after he allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle at a nearby gas station, reports CBS5.com. Police apprehended Broadnax about eight minutes later after forming a perimeter of patrol rifle officers.

No one was injured during the incident. Broadnax has a criminal history dating back 20 years and at least 14 prior criminal convictions, according to InsideBayArea.com. He was charged with false imprisonment, assault with a firearm, being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm, being an ex-felon in possession of a concealed fire arm and possession of crack cocaine.

His bail is set for $762,500.
