BELLEVILLE, N.J. — The Belleville Education Association (BEA) has asked the Belleville Board of Education to stop making security upgrades at district schools.
The upgrades, which include issuing electronic identification cards for faculty and staff, as well as retired law enforcement officers for monitoring, will cost about $2 million over five years, which BEA believes is too costly. Instead, the association believes the funds could be better spent on metal detectors.
The district’s director of security said that security upgrades were proceeding with the goal of being completed in early 2014.
