ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) officials have placed its police chief, Sam Beamon, on administrative leave Thursday in response to complaints that the campus mishandled a recent assault and sexual battery case.
Katherine Lowe, an ECSU senior, reported to campus police that her dorm leader, 29-year-old Anthony Butler Jr., had entered into Lowe’s room at Butler Hall on two separate occasions in February and April, attempting to have sex with her, WAVY.com reports. Although Lowe contacted campus police about the incidents, Butler remained on campus until city police arrested and charged him.
As a result, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation.
