East Stroudsburg University Suspends Hockey Team for Hazing

Two coaches have made accusations against a third coach, claiming he encouraged heavy drinking and hazing among the university hockey team.

East Stroudsburg University has canceled its men’s hockey season following hazing allegations against the A team and its former head coach, Andrew Nowicki.

B team volunteer coach Brian Divis and former B team coach Dave Nufrio allege that the A team frequently drank excessively and engaged in hazing encouraged by Nowicki, as well as prevented the B team from playing in the season. According to the university, Nowicki resigned in early December, the Pocono Record reports.

Nowicki was arrested in 2009 in connection with a campus marijuana ring and later in 2011 and 2013 for DUI charges, which Divis and Nufrio said the university should have uncovered during a background check. Divis and Nufrio also claim Nowicki is still involved with the university’s hockey program, despite officials’ claims to the contrary.
