DURHAM, N.C. — In response to a spike in robberies, Duke University officials are considering blocking public access to some campus entrances at night.
The most recent attack occurred on August 25 at 10 p.m., where two individuals were robbed at gunpoint near Duke’s main library. In June, an attacker grabbed a woman who was hiking through Duke Forest, and in July, two armed robberies were reported at the Duke Gardens, NewsObserver.com reports.
The university plans to add more staff to its police force and schedule campus officers to patrol Duke Trails. Additionally, the university has improved light, trimmed bushes and trees, and replaced locks on Central Campus apartment doors.
Within the next couple of weeks, university officials will determine whether they will cut off nighttime access to some roads typically used as easy admissions onto campus grounds.
