ANOKA, Minn. — On March 5, the Anoka-Hennepin school board voted 5-1 to accept a settlement agreement with six current and former students who filed two lawsuits over a school policy that required staff to remain neutral on homosexuality. One board member resigned in protest.
The lawsuits claimed that the policy created a school environment where gay bullying was extremely pervasive, the Pioneer Press reports. A lump sum of $270,000 will be divided among the student plaintiffs.
The settlement also requires the district to hire staff to improve the school environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and to better address and report bullying.
