District Receives $1.3M School Security Grant from State of Conn.

MILFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced that the Milford School District will receive $1.3 million as part of the School Security Grant Program.

It will cost the district $2.82 million to upgrade security at its 14 schools. With the state’s contribution, the city of Milford will spend $1.5 million complete the upgrades, The New Haven Register reports.

The district has already performed the following safety improvements:

  • Installed panic alarms in every school main offices
  • Linked all classroom phones directly to 911
  • Made all interior classrooms lock from the inside
  • Allowed police to access video surveillance in buildings
  • Issued every school employee an ID badge
  • Provided security training for all employees

Milford School District also plans to upgrade and increase surveillance monitoring and electronic access control, purchase additional portable radios, install ballistic glass on school windows and add quick link buttons in other areas of the buildings, Milford Patch reports.

The School Security Grant Program, which is part of the Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety Act, will award a total of $16 million in state-issued bonds to improve security at 435 schools in Connecticut. Each of the 75 municipalities in the state will be reimbursed 20% to 80%, depending on its wealth.
